It's plain sailing as club raises cash for hospice

SAILORS have completed a 24-hour sponsored sail to raise funds for a local hospice.

About 70 members, aged six to 81, took part in Broxbourne Sailing Club's fundraiser for St Clare Hospice.

The club's youth fleet, windsurfers and disabled sailors all took part in the feat.

Their endeavours raised £1,751 for the Hastingwood hospice, which will share the money with the Cardiac Risk in the Young charity.

The sailing club, based in Nazeing, presented a cheque to the hospice last week.

Club commodore Nick Hayes said: "The 24-hour sail was the first we have held for about five years. It was a great success and raised money for two worthy causes.

"We supported St Clare Hospice because of the link we have with the charity because our social secretary is a cashier at the hospice's shop in Harlow."

The total raised will also be boosted with match-funding of up to £650 from DHL Enfield.

Hospice community fundraiser Dave Bishop said: "A very big thank you to commodore Nick Hayes and all the team at Broxbourne Sailing Club for their wonderful donation.

"It must have been very demanding to sail non-stop for 24 hours, but we've been assured by the team that much fun was had completing this wonderful challenge.

"We very much look forward to working alongside the club again in the future."

BSC secures 50k of funding
By: Scott Room

Broxbourne Sailing Club has secured Olympic legacy funding from Sport Englands Inspired Facilities Fund.

We have received £50,000 of National Lottery funding to make the water frontage  safer for sailors. Works will commence in a couple of weeks and will create a safer environment for launching and recovering boats and in particular will assist disabled sailors who due to current erosion of the existing water front find it hard to access the launching pontoon and hoist.

Sport Englands Chair, Richard Lewis, said: This investment will further extend the fantastic sporting legacy in the Broxbourne area, complementing the Lee Valley White Water Centre.

Nick Hayes, Broxbourne Sailing Clubs Commodore commented; This has come at an exciting time for this. It will enable us to continue and further expand our plans to make sailing and our facilities even more available for young people and adults locally. On behalf of all our members and those who will start sailing in the future we\'d like to say a big thank you to all involved.

Local MP Robert Halfon said This extra cash for Broxbourne Sailing Club is fantastic news, especially for Harlow, Nazeing and Roydon residents. With the Olympic games coming up, it is perfect timing to have these world-class facilities on our doorstep. I would urge everyone to visit the sailing club and give it a go. On behalf of the local community, I am grateful to Sport England for helping to make this happen.

The secret to success @BSC?
By: Scott Room

Peter Selway has put together a very interesting document highlighting some thoughts on how to conquer the shifty sailing conditions that we experience at Broxbourne Sailing Club. It's in the documents section within the members area!

CHRISTMAS CRACKER BOXING DAY
By: Simon Hayes

This is the last race of 2012 and it will be a great chance to work off some of that christmas dinner and maybe clear your  head. The race will start at 10.45 (silly hats optional). The galley will be open and so will the bar, so even if you are not up to the sailing its a great chance to get out of the house and maybe show off your new xmas presents.
